Income Tax Deadlines for Sole Proprietors

Self-employed individuals, including sole proprietors, have different filing deadlines than most taxpayers:

  1. • June 15 – Filing deadline for self-employed individuals and their spouses/common-law partners.
  2. • April 30 – Payment deadline for any taxes owing. (Balances must still be paid by this date, even if the filing deadline is later.)

Our CPA team ensures your return is filed accurately and on time, avoiding costly penalties and interest.

Where to Report Sole-Proprietorship Income and Expenses

Sole proprietors do not file a separate business tax return. Instead, all business and personal income is reported together on your T1 General Income Tax Return.

  1. • Business income is reported on Form T2125 – Statement of Business or Professional Activities (a separate form is required for each business if you operate more than one).
  2. • Other sources of income (employment, investment, pension, etc.) are combined with your business income to calculate total taxable income.

Our licensed CPAs ensure your business income and expenses are reported correctly and maximize your eligible deductions.

Common Business Deductions for Sole Proprietors

As a sole proprietor, you may be able to claim a wide range of legitimate business expenses, such as:

  1. • Advertising and marketing fees
  2. • Professional services (legal, accounting, consulting)
  3. • Office supplies, utilities, telephone, and internet (business use portion)
  4. • Insurance premiums and license fees
  5. • Bank charges and interest on business loans
  6. • Delivery, shipping, and motor vehicle expenses
  7. • Salaries, wages, and employer contributions
  8. • Meals and entertainment (within CRA limits)
  9. • Start-up costs and financing expenses
  10. • Capital cost allowance (CCA) on business assets

All expenses are recorded on Form T2125 and deducted from your gross business income, resulting in your net business income or loss.
